James: True Religion Series Part 3

James: True Religion Series
There is No 'In-Crowd'

Part 3

. Imagine a Christian superstar visited our church - how would we receive him or her?  We'd most probably have that mix of excitement and nervousness that comes from being around people who we consider to be 'above us' and who have so much social power over us.  What would it be like to have this person's endorsement... but what about if they criticize us?  We'll do all we can to get them to like us!
According to James, the whole idea of celebrity culture doesn't actually fit in the church.  It's natural, but not OK.  Treating any person as more or less important than any other is an offense not only to those who we disrespect, it's an offense to God!  We look at Luke 15 for some hard-hitting challenges about how we apply this truth in the life of our church.

Choosing Carefully How We Live

As we imagine together what a life of love really looks like we receive guidance from Jesus' story of the "Good Samaritan" in Luke 10.  We then return to Ephesians 5 to where we discover 4 key principles that help us to evaluate our own lives in order to move closer to a life like Christ's, where we love God with our whole being and love others as ourselves.

Life Together: Culture Shock

Life Together:
CULTURE SHOCK

Ephesians 5:1-2 commands us to live a life of love - just as Jesus loved us and gave Himself for us.  In this message we explore our natural tendency to drift from that and how much a shock to the system it is when we realise what love actually requires of us.  We celebrate what love is already causing us to be and do and we also dream about what self-giving love could look like and accomplish as we allow it to truly define our culture.

Teamwork Trials & Triumphs

The book of Jonah has really challenged our heart and faith for the mission God has called us to.  In this message we explore some of the joys and challenges that come from being called to do mission as a team.  The book of 3 John is a fantastic example of both the triumphs and trials of team ministry.  By exploring it we are both encouraged and challenged about the roles we play in working together to share and declare the love and truth of Jesus to whoever He connects us with.

On Mission Part 1: Heart Check

On Mission Part 1:
Having a Heart For It

Have you ever felt like God wanted you to do something but struggled to follow through?  The story of Jonah is a great example of someone getting a clear call from God but choosing to run in the other direction.  Why?  It was all to do with the condition of his heart.  Sometimes our desires, priorities and loyalties simply don't match up with God's; and there can be a struggle to bring them into alignment.  Jonah's struggle reveals a lot to us about the glorious character of God and also the deceptiveness of our own hearts.  It gives us a great opportunity to check on ourselves to see whether we are running on mission or from mission.  Like Jonah we've been given a mission to bring God's grace and truth to those who need it, but what are the heart issues for us that cause us to run the other way?
